I do hair for my friends as a hobby. Unless you are going for a Goth look, or are a woman of color, the answer to this question is definitely NO! However, if you are in one of the above two groups, let me recommend that you first wait twenty four hours after shampooing and don't put in any conditioner or styling product either---this will keep your scalp from being damaged while still keeping products from interfering with the coloring product. Then use an Ash or "cooler" black (will give a better contrast than a "warmer" or "natural" black). Go with "nuetral" or "natural" black if you can't find one labeled "ash" or "cooler". Follow the instructions and then wait twenty four hours after coloring without shampooing, conditinoing or products for the same reasons as before. Then, use a "chunking" kit to bleach your hair to almost white but only in certain chunks of hair. Keep the chunking kit on (it's a little hat that lets you pull out chunks of hair and bleach them, whichever chunks you want---around your face, on the tips, just a certain strand or whatever). It'll probably take a take a couple of bleaching treatments to get the chunks bleached enough since your hair will be dyed a very dark color and YOU MUST NOT REMOVE THE CHUNKING HAT between bleaches or you'll spoil the job. After that, you can use Manic Panic or a similar brand, if you were unable to find a red or purple chunking kit (some of them have only natural colors), and pick a bright red or purple shade for yor chunks. I would not try to first color bright red or purple and then go black in the hopes that the purple or red will shine through underneath---it usually doesn't work and if does work it's not as dramatic as chiunking in the bright color you want. Some people mix the bright color with their black dye, which usually works better than trying to put the bright color on underneath, but that has a certain failure rate, too, although sometimes it works---I'd go with the other. If you are a fair skinned person and you want that kind of drama without Goth, pick a Medium Ash Brown as your darkest color, or maybe even your own natural color and then chunk it red or purple as described. Otherwise, the black will overwhelm the red or purple part and also you'll look quite ghostly. Be sure to use a lot of conditioner, maybe even leave conditioner on for three or four minutes after the entire process is done, a leave in brand after that wouldn't hurt either. These products damage your hair, and you want to let it heal a little afterwards.
