My hair is to my waist. I'd like it a little bit shorter ( but not much). Also to have it styled, with a layered look. The last time I asked a person to layer it for me, it was just 2 different lengths. I meant layered all the way down.

First, I am a stylist, second, it really depends on how much color they have to use, for waist length hair, even in a not so high-end salon, you are looking at between 65-100 dollars, plus the haircut, and any stylist worth her training can give you the layers you want ( I could ). You really need to realize, that your stylist wont be there to style it for you everyday..unless you are uber rich and can afford to have her do your hair everyday, so pick a style that you think you can do after she shows you how, and she will if she knows what she's doing, also, it's good to get a good shampoo and conditioner and styling products made for color treated or chemically treated hair. Your color will last longer.
As for going from brown to red, it shouldn't be too hard, depending on how many shades lighter you are going...brown to red means lighter because you would be taking out some color to get to the red stages in your hair. Make sure your stylist does a thorough consultation with you and you are sure about what you want. Bring a picture of the look you are trying to achieve if you can, that will really help!

Well since you have long hair it will cost more to dye it since they have to use more than one bottle. I really depends where you go...stylists all have their own price ranges. To get what you want on the style you might want to go to a pricey salon because you will probably be happier with the cut but you can probably go anywhere for the hair dye. If you are just looking for like a auburn type color you should just grab a friend and do it yourself but if you're looking for something bright red definately go to a salon. The good thing about salons is that especially with hair color they will try to fix it if you aren't happy
